Community backs Andy Burnham for Labour Party leadership

Community Union’s National Executive Council has endorsed Andy Burnham MP to be the next leader of the Labour Party.

Community General Secretary Roy Rickhuss CBE said:

“Andy Burnham has the full support of Community to deliver the vision that he has set forth for the country to empower regions, regenerate communities and boldly implement Labour’s Modern Industrial Strategy. We will partner with Andy to deliver this ambitious agenda and breakdown the barriers to creating ‘economic growth in every postcode’.

“This agenda will build on the important work that Sir Keir Starmer has initiated including the Make Work Pay reforms, the Modern Industrial Strategy, the Steel Strategy and more. Many of the benefits of these transformative policies have yet to be realised or appreciated.

“There is more good work to do. Industry requires energy security to protect competitiveness when confronted by global shocks. Alan Milburn’s report into Young People and Work has exposed the urgent need to invest in technical and vocational education. And the forthcoming review of the prison system must lead to better conditions for staff who currently face disrespect, abuse and violence on a daily basis.

“Andy Burnham is the right person to continue to deliver Labour’s manifesto of change, on which the party won an extraordinary mandate to govern two years ago. I look forward to working closely with Andy as we renew the country after the damage done by fourteen years of Conservative government.”
