Community and Tata Steel open Llanwern Learning Centre

Investment in our local communities is the cornerstone of what Community stands for. This month, Community Union and Tata Steel officially opened a brand new Learning Centre at Tata Steel Llanwern.

This centre isn’t just a building; it’s a significant investment in the skills, development and long-term potential of both the workforce and the local Newport community.

A Hub for Lifelong Learning

Our new centre is designed to be a “centre of excellence,” offering workers on-site a dedicated space to upskill, retrain and prepare for the evolving demands of the steel industry. By providing easy access to education and personal development, this partnership ensures that Llanwern remains at the forefront of the steel industry.

The opening ceremony was attended by Jayne Bryant MS and John Griffiths MS, highlighting how vital lifelong learning is to the economic prosperity of Wales.

Jayne Bryant MS said:

“You’re never too old to learn. It’s fantastic to see this new lifelong learning space open to all staff, providing convenient access to learning, opportunities to build relationships, and a supportive environment to develop new skills.”

The project is a result of a strong partnership between Community Union, Tata Steel and the Welsh Government via the Wales Union Learning Fund (WULF). This collaboration emphasises a shared vision that a supported, educated workforce is a resilient one.

Emma Winser, Head of Commercial Services at Tata UK said:

“It’s an honour to be part of a collaboration that will offer extensive training opportunities and a facility for ‘classroom training’ to all employees. The facility will give us the chance to take groups away from the day to day and learn together Face to Face as a team – the best way to learn”

Jacqueline Thomas, WULF Project Learning Organiser at Community said:

“It’s great to see Tata’s commitment to supporting on‑site learning activities, enabling upskilling, retraining, and further education for employees. Community Union looks forward to the continued collaboration.”

Community looks forward to continuing this collaboration, ensuring that every Community member has the opportunity to grow, regardless of where they are in their career.
