Business Secretary confirms “absolute” commitment to Britain’s steel industry

Speaking this morning, the Business Secretary Rt Hon Kwasi Kwarteng stated that “the commitment, from my point of view, is absolute” to the U.K.’s steel industry.

Kwarteng stated: “It seems to me, crazy from my point of view, to abandon steel when levelling up is our goal”

He went on to say that in his conversations with the Prime Minister Boris Johnson, he agreed with this view.

The comments were made at the Community trade union Steel Sector Annual Conference on Monday morning.

The Business Secretary spoke of his desire to work with unions and businesses on how Britain can best build a sustainable steel industry, as well as meeting the challenges of climate change, Coronavirus and decarbonisation.

In a Q&A session, he further stated that the government are “working towards a completely different approach” towards procuring British steel over that from overseas, and that Britain’s exit from the European Union and new subsidy control regime presents an opportunity for the sector.
