Budget reaction

Responding to this afternoon’s Budget, Community Assistant General Secretary Alasdair McDiarmid said:

“In this Budget, the Chancellor has shown she is serious about supporting industrial communities and standing up for working people.

“Communities will benefit from her commitment to “buy British,” particularly in sectors like steel. It is vital that the major, steel-intensive infrastructure projects she has pledged, such as Northern Powerhouse Rail and Sizewell C, are delivered promptly and using materials made in Britain.

“Workers will also gain from the Chancellor’s plan to raise the minimum wage, the additional funding allocated to the education sector, and the targeted support promised for key sectors within the industrial strategy.

“Community welcomes the Chancellor’s commitment to tackling poverty by lifting the cruel two-child benefit cap and freezing single prescription charges, which will help uplift those most in need.”
