STATEMENT FROM COMMUNITY, UNITE AND GMB
The steel unions’ expert consultants, Syndex, have concluded their report assessing the decarbonisation strategy for British Steel. Today Syndex presented the report to the union reps at British Steel, who have unanimously endorsed the report and its important recommendations.
The next stage will be for the National Trade Union Steel Coordinating Committee, comprising of senior representatives from Community, Unite and GMB, to formally present the report to Jingye, and to discuss in private with the owner how to take forward its contents.
The report includes a number of recommendations, the most crucial being that British Steel must operate two blast furnaces until the new technologies are introduced. Syndex have demonstrated that bringing the Queen Anne furnace back on line is vital to manage the business’s fixed costs, to avoid unacceptable risks relating to external steel supply, and to deliver a fairer transition for the workforce.
The steel unions are clear the Government has a critical role to play in supporting the transition, and in delivering an industrial strategy for steel. The thousands of workers at Scunthorpe expect the Government to live up to promises made to steelworkers, and be ready to commit the billion pounds they earmarked to enable British Steel to decarbonise.
Community’s Assistant General Secretary Alasdair McDiarmid said:
“British Steel in Scunthorpe of huge strategic importance for the UK steel industry, as well as for the local economy in North East Lincolnshire and beyond – we simply cannot afford to lose it. The new report produced by our industry experts Syndex outlines steps that can be taken over the months ahead to ensure that we maintain capacity, including through keeping two blast furnaces running until new technologies can be implemented on site.
“We look forward to presenting the plan to Jingye over the weeks ahead, and we stand ready to work with the company and the government to secure a long-term future for steelmaking in Scunthorpe.”
