Boosting workplace communication skills and confidence at GXO

It’s been a rewarding experience running communication and confidence-building session with GXO Barnsley and Doncaster recently. The session was delivered in partnership with the Oratory Studio.

Why are oratory skills important?

These sessions are a powerful reminder of how vital oratory skills are, not just for individual growth, but for the entire GXO team. It’s easy to focus on technical skills, but having the ability to communicate effectively and speak with confidence can truly transform a workplace.

They enable clear and persuasive communication, and being able to articulate ideas confidently and concisely helps individuals influence decisions, lead teams, and build strong professional relationships. This could include delivering a presentation, advocating for a new project, or providing clear instructions to colleagues – all of which are something we do daily. By training our oratory skills, we can minimise misunderstandings and improve efficiency at work.

Oratory also encompasses the ability to actively listen and respond thoughtfully in meetings, during negotiations and in one-on-one conversations. This two-way communication fosters trust and collaboration, both of which are essential skills both at work and in your personal life.

Key takeaways from this oratory session

One of the key takeaways was building confidence. The session involved exercises to help people find their voice and overcome the fear of public speaking or contributing in a group setting. The skills our members gained go beyond the workplace — they’re applicable in every area of life. The ability to express yourself clearly and confidently improves collaboration, reduces misunderstandings and fosters an environment where innovation can thrive.

Ultimately, Community strives to invest in these “soft skills” to give our members and Reps the confidence to have a strong voice at work. It’s about creating a culture where everyone feels empowered to contribute their best ideas, leading to stronger teams and a more successful workplace for everyone.
