A hugely disappointing response

The government has today published their response to the BEIS Committee report ‘Liberty Steel and the future of the UK Steel Industry: Government Response to the Committee’s Fourth Report’.

Alasdair McDiarmid, Operations Director at the steelworkers’ union Community, says:

‘This is a hugely disappointing response from a government apparently determined to kick the big issues down the road. The cross-party committee rightly found that to safeguard the future of our industry the government must deliver a long-overdue steel sector deal and take urgent action on exorbitant energy prices. The failure to engage with these crucial recommendations represents another missed opportunity for government to demonstrate their commitment to British steelworkers and our strategically important industry.

Steelworkers continue to look to government to show leadership through giving us the level playing field we need to compete and decarbonise, thereby securing thousands of jobs sustaining steel communities across Britain. Community was pleased to give evidence to this important inquiry and its recommendations demand action not lip service.”
