Branch Secretary

Branch Secretaries are the administrative heart and strategic leader of Community branches. Unlike representatives, who primarily handle day-to-day individual grievances, or advocate for better rights, Branch Secretaries focus running an organised, cohesive and powerful collective of Community members.

Key responsibilities of Branch Secretaries

  • Branch Administration: Managing the day-to-day operations of the branch, including keeping accurate records, handling official correspondence and managing branch finances.
  • Branch Health Checks: Conducting regular branch health checks alongside your regional organiser to ensure your member data is up to date, as well as identifying your branch’s strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Organising Meetings: Planning and leading regular branch meetings and AGMs, ensuring agendas are set, minutes are taken, and Community members’ voices are heard.
  • Strategic Representation: Acting as the chief spokesperson for the branch, representing members’ collective interests to employers and at regional or national union conferences.
  • Supporting Community Reps: Coordinating and supporting your branch’s network of representatives to ensure effective workplace organisation.

Your rights as a Branch Secretary

Under the Employment Act 2002, Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 and the Employment Rights Act 2025, Branch Secretaries in the UK have specific legal standings. This includes the right to reasonable paid time off to undertake your union duties (if Community is recognised in your workplace), as well as have access to facilities and accommodation to undertake your role, such as a private room, secure filing or a computer.
