Thousands of Community members work in a broad range of manufacturing sectors in traditional and modern industries. We are experienced in working with manufacturing employers to create positive change for the industries where our members work. If you work in manufacturing, we can help you too.
Community is the leading union in the UK steel industry representing thousands of steelworkers across the country.
Community leads negotiations with all the major steel employers including Tata Steel, British Steel, Liberty Steel, Celsa and Outokumpu.
In addition to these major companies, Community represents thousands of people at smaller steel and wire producers and stockholders.
Community has supported, and continues to support its members in all steel production sites across the UK both in good times and in bad.
Community has been working with UK Steel to update the safe working guidance for the sector as the economy opens up and we learn from best practice. You can view the revised document here.
Textiles, Carpets and Leather
Community is the main union for the textiles industry, this includes all carpet makers, leather, apparel and hosiery workers. These industries produce vital, high-quality products for both the UK and foreign markets. Community protects these workers and supports positive change in these industries by working with our members’ companies and employer associations.
We are the recognised union for footwear manufacturers and the union is rooted at the heart of UK footwear production in Northamptonshire. The UK’s footwear industry is responsible for exports of over £500 million of goods each year. Community members work for internationally-renowned companies like Clarks, Church’s and Loake Bros as well as many smaller businesses in the footwear industry.
Producers of ‘white goods’ such as fridges and washing machines are also well represented within Community. Workers in these factories produce complex machinery which we all use every day. As well as the domestic appliances industry, Community represents workers across light engineering companies and in many different technical and mechanical professions.
In addition to our major involvement in these manufacturing sectors Community members work at food producers, plastics companies, automotive part manufacturers and many other industrial businesses.
We understand manufacturing and we are always open to working with new employers and their workforce.
