Unions call on Mistry to outline how Tata will be a responsible seller

30th March 2016

In response to the news yesterday that Tata intends to divest its UK steel industry, Roy Rickhuss has written to the Chairman of Tata Steel, Cyrus Mistry, in his role as Chair of National Trade Union Steel Co-ordinating Committee.

Roy Rickhuss, General Secretary of the steelworkers’ union Community said:

“You will recall that when we discussed your intentions to divest long products last year you gave a clear commitment, in writing, that Tata would act as a responsible seller. I am again writing to you to confirm that you will extend this commitment to the intended divestment of the entire UK industry by Tata.

It is vital that adequate time is given for a new investor to be found. Tata has a moral and social responsibility to steel communities and families across the UK and must cooperate with the unions and the UK government.”

  1. Community is the largest and leading union in the UK steel industry.
  2. Roy Rickhuss led a Community delegation to Mumbai which included two Port Talbot steelworkers and Aberavon MP, Stephen Kinnock.
