Community was saddened to hear news of the death of Mary Turner, President of the GMB. Over the years, many Community officials worked alongside Mary, particularly on the National Executive of the Labour Party. Everyone spoke of her with great fondness and admiration. She was a steadfast champion for the causes she believed in, no more so than with her crusade for free school meals.
Whenever Mary rose to speak, at TUC or Labour conference, people sat up and listened because she always spoke passionately and with great integrity.
In this way, Mary was somebody who transcended her own union and was an inspiration to many other trade unionists and activists within the labour movement, including many Community members. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Everyone at Community sends condolences to the friends and family of Mary and to colleagues and members of the GMB. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.
