Yesterday (Sunday 13 November), we learned of the sad news that our friend and colleague David Lawrie had passed away, aged 47.
David was a respected branch secretary who worked for G4S in Scotland. He spent years fighting for our members in the Justice Sector, firstly in the Prison Services Union and then Community.
In 2014, David was elected onto the Justice Sector Committee where he played a key role in the sector’s development, particularly of our Safer Justice Sector campaign.
David always stood up and spoke up for his members – a committed voice for workers in justice services. There was no better example than at the recent TUC Congress in Brighton. David wasn’t well at the time but, despite the discomfort he was feeling, he was determined to support the motion highlighting our members’ concerns about the dangers of new psychoactive substances.
Many people have left kind thoughts and messages describing David as a friend, a dedicated activist and a true gentleman.
Our thoughts are with his family and particularly his partner Jackie through this difficult time and we know that David will always be remembered by us, as a person who inspired admiration and affection from all who knew him.
