Steelworkers to visit Parliament

11th April 2016

sj3Community, the steelworkers’ union, will today lobby the Business Secretary, Sajid Javid at a meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group on steel. This meeting will take place ahead of a statement in Parliament from Mr Javid about the steel crisis.

Steelworkers from across the country have travelled to London to meet with their local MPs and to demand that Sajid Javid hold Tata Steel to their responsibility as a seller and ensure that steel production can continue until a new buyer can be found.

Speaking ahead of their visit to Parliament, Roy Rickhuss, General Secretary of Community said:

“Today marks another step forward in our campaign to save our steel. Government has a crucial role to play in this process and our members will be demanding that Sajid Javid does not let our industry die on his watch.

“Selling a large part of the UK steel industry will take months not weeks. It is vital that production continues until a new operator can be found and that certain parts are not cherry-picked at the expense of our steelmaking capacity.

“As we have always said – we stand ready to work constructively with the government to secure a long term future for the steel industry.”
