Following the deadline of 30 June for bids to be placed for British Steel, the steelworkers trade union, Community, has said that bids for the whole of the business should be prioritised.
Alasdair McDiarmid, Operations Director, said:
“We are encouraged by the news that a number of bids for British Steel have been received by the Official Receiver. The best future for British Steel is to be kept together and sold as a whole. Therefore, as the Special Managers analyse the bids, we believe that if there are bids that are for the whole business then they should be prioritised. Bids for the whole business should also be the focus of further government support.
“It is important that the government and all parties allow the necessary time for due diligence and that business as usual continues while this process is ongoing. We remain positive that British Steel can have a viable future under the right new ownership and we are open to discussions with interested parties. Any purchaser isn’t just taking on a business, they would be taking on a skilled and dedicated workforce as has been demonstrated by the production records that have been achieved in recent weeks.”
