Responding to a Sky News report that British Steel is seeking government support following the EU freezing carbon credit allocations for UK companies due to Brexit, a spokesperson for the steelworkers trade union, Community, said:
“If this report is accurate then this is just another example of the potentially damaging effects of the uncertainty that the government has created through its failure to secure the support of Parliament for an exit deal. It is vitally important that the government takes the necessary steps to ensure UK steel companies, and other industries facing the consequences of ongoing uncertainty, are not disadvantaged. We want UK steel companies to be able to compete on a level playing field but the current challenges presented by Brexit uncertainty are making the situation worse.
“If government and Parliament can’t bring an end to the uncertainty then the matter must be put back to the people to have a final say.”
