The steelworkers trade union Community is backing the bid by British Steel to be a logistics hub, which is aimed at spreading the benefits of Heathrow expansion throughout the UK. British Steel has today hosted an engagement event with businesses in the Yorkshire and Humber region ahead of a visit to the company’s Scunthorpe headquarters by a delegation from Heathrow. British Steel has been longlisted by Heathrow to be one of four logistics hubs throughout the UK.
Speaking in support of British Steel’s bid, Roy Rickhuss, General Secretary of Community, said:
“British Steel in Scunthorpe has all the attributes necessary to be one of Heathrow’s logistics hubs. Its location, transport links and the skill sets within the workforce in supplying to major infrastructure projects means it is a strong bid and it has Community’s full support. This approach to spreading the benefits of Heathrow expansion is to be welcomed. The potential for a lasting legacy for the wider community across Yorkshire and the Humber, as well as consolidating British Steel’s position as a foundation supplier for UK infrastructure, is an opportunity not to be missed.”
The union announced its support for Heathrow expansion in 2016.
