Statement on Port Talbot incident

Community - 26th April 2019

Shortly after 3.30am today (26/04/2019) there was an incident at Tata Steel’s Port Talbot site involving a spillage of molten iron, according to a statement from Tata Steel.

Two employees suffered minor injuries and both have been released following treatment.

A spokesperson for the steelworkers’ trade union Community said:

“Our union reps have been in urgent meetings at Port Talbot this morning to discuss the incident. They have made it clear to the company that it’s important that the time and space is taken to understand how this happened before production is resumed.

“We don’t feel it’s appropriate to comment on the details of the incident until the facts of what’s happened are firmly established.

“Our members’ health and safety will always be a priority for both the union and the company.

“We are thankful that there are no serious injuries.

“It is important that all appropriate procedures are followed now to ensure lessons are learnt and any necessary changes are implemented.”
