UK government ministers today visited two separate steelworks.
Speaking after Anna Soubry, Minister of State responsible for industry, visited steel plants across South Wales, Roy Rickhuss, General Secretary of the steelworkers trade union, Community said:
“We welcome this visit from the Minister, the struggling UK steel industry is vitally important to the whole economy and government needs to recognise this and take action to support it.
“I understand that senior management from Tata Steel and also Celsa Steel met with Anna Soubry to press home the need for the government to take action on high energy prices, cheap imports and emissions trading. We agree that this government needs to urgently stand up for steel, however it is important Tata Steel remember the foundation upon which any future success will be built – its loyal workforce. In seeking to protect and promote the steel industry, both government and the companies involved must ensure the jobs and conditions of those on the front line are not in any way compromised.
“Community stands ready to work with government and the industry to secure a long term future for steel in Britain. Today I have written directly to Anna Soubry, asking to meet with her and discuss how best we can work together.”
