Response to BIS Select Committee report on steel industry

21st December 2015

Responding to the House of Commons BIS Select Committee report into the steel industry, Roy Rickhuss, General Secretary of Community, the steelworkers’ union said:

“This report is a damning indictment of the government’s record on the steel industry. For years, along with UK steel producers, we have been calling for specific action to support the industry to enable it to survive and compete in a challenging global market.

“Only in recent months has the government been stirred into action and even now it remains to be seen just what will be delivered.

“The compensation for energy intensive industries that was delivered last week was a long time coming. Meanwhile we have seen thousands of jobs be threatened or disappear.

“Sadly the action the government is taking now is far too late for Redcar and the wider steel community on Teesside and the report is right to criticise the scandalous lack of government intervention to secure the assets.

“Despite these devastating job losses and missed opportunities I know there is still a steel industry worth fighting for.

“Ministers must understand that the UK steel industry now expects the support it has long called for.

“There are more challenges ahead but as the union for steelworkers we are committed to working with government and the industry to both secure short-term action and develop the long-term strategy that ensures we create a sustainable future for the UK steel industry.”

Roy Rickhuss gave evidence to the select committee during their inquiry.
