Homeless campaign continues

“It’s events like these that really bring people together and raise spirits…”

A number of events have taken place in recent weeks as Community’s homelessness priority campaign continues. Ahead of Christmas, the union put out an appeal to its members to donate warm clothing, coats and sleeping bags. Local Community reps arranged collections in their workplaces and the donations were then gathered at the union’s regional offices for onward distribution to local homeless charities and support organisations.

Melantha Chittenden, Community’s homelessness campaign co-ordinator, said:

“There has been so much support that the union has already been able to begin distributing to various homeless shelters. Thanks to the work of Community’s staff and members we have started this campaign off on a good foot.

“But we know there is more to be done in the remaining winter months, so we will be reaching out to members with new campaign actions over the coming weeks.”

There was a significant haul of donations in the union’s branches in Wales and the full collection was assembled at the union’s Cardiff office for the Wales regional forum in December. Reg Gutteridge, a Community National Executive Council member and army veteran, was in attendance following his video appeal in November that launched the call for donations.

Elsewhere in the union’s regions Charlotte Appleyard, Executive Administrator for Community, completed the 10km Sleep Walk for Shelter London and successfully raised £604 for the homeless, speaking after the event Charlotte said:

“It’s events like these that really bring people together and raise spirits, especially over Christmas. I would just like to say a massive thank you for all the donations and the work that has been put into the campaign so far and I hope we can continue to carry this momentum forward.”
