Community, the union for workers at Dungavel Immigration Removal Centre, has welcomed news that government plans for an alternative facility near Glasgow Airport have been blocked. Renfrewshire Council has turned down planning permission today. If the proposal for the new short-term holding facility had gone ahead Dungavel would have closed at the end of 2017 with the loss of over 120 jobs.
Responding to today’s news, Steve Farrell, Lead Organiser for Community, said:
“Throughout this process the workers on the frontline of public service at Dungavel have been an afterthought. Today’s decision is welcome news but it does not end the uncertainty for our members. Home Office ministers should take this opportunity to think again, speak to Community and find a way forward that does not lead to the loss of skills and experience of the Dungavel workforce.”
Community is the leading union in justice, custodial and immigration services. The union is campaigning for a safer justice sector.
