Tata Steel’s European Works Council has issued a statement expressing concern about the company focussing on cost-cutting rather than investment. The statement, signed by EWC Chair, Frits van Wieringen, and EWC Secretary, Roy Rickhuss, is being issued to workers across the company.
Commenting further on the current situation in the company, Roy Rickhuss, General Secretary of Community said:
“The proposed joint venture with Thyssenkrupp was an initiative that came from the Indian owners. The Tata Steel Europe workforce should not be the ones who pay the price of the failure to get the joint venture over the line. We are open to working with management in both Europe and India to secure the long-term future for the European business, but we are concerned that Tata is pursuing a short-term approach following the collapse of the joint venture. We will oppose any measures which threaten jobs or site closures and put the long-term future of Tata Steel Europe at risk.”
