On the 8th November 2018, Community’s Finance and Professional Sector held their inaugural Conference in Kidderminster, where delegates and guests gathered to discuss many of the challenges and opportunities facing Community in the sector.
Members and officers openly discussed current issues with lawyers, employers and politicians, gave their view and started a debate around the direction of the sector and how Community should react.
A range of speakers took part in the day, including solicitors, employers and MPs. From bespoke sector issues to brexit, a range of topics were brought up for discussion. Community Officials Nick Caton and Caroline Taylor along with NEC member Alex Robinson then gave a presentation on the impact that Automation may have on the Finance Industry, and the challenges for unions in adapting to a changing industry.
Steve Collinson, HR of Zurich Financial services agreed to sign Community’s Mental Health Charter on behalf of the company, committing to our priority campaign of tackling the stigma of mental health in the workplace. Steve made it very clear how important he believes Mental Health Awareness in the workplace is, and was eager to show his support to the campaign.
All sessions generated interesting debate amongst all attendees, and set out some key issues that the sector are facing, especially regarding the rise in Automation, which may bring change at an unprecedented pace. Community General Secretary Roy Rickhuss was in attendance and acknowledged the work Community, in conjunction with the Fabian Society, have done on this in setting up a new Commission on Workers and Technology, chaired by Yvette Cooper MP, whilst recognising this is very much on our doorstep and members across Community need our support now.
Following the Conference, Alan Wood, National Officer for the Finance and Professional Sector, said “This Conference has been a great success and I am pleased to see so many of our Reps engaged in the work we are doing in the sector.
“I am confident that this is the first of many Finance Conferences as the sector grows and Community’s influence increases. I wish to thank all speakers, delegates and everyone who helped make it such a success”
