Commenting on the handover today of Tata Steel’s Dalzell and Clydebridge steel plants to Liberty Steel, Roy Rickhuss, General Secretary of the steelworkers’ union Community, said:
“This is yet another step closer to realising the goal that everyone has been working towards – restarting steel rolling at Dalzell and Clydebridge. This is testament to the vision of Liberty Steel and the hard work and collective will of everyone involved in the Steel Task Force, especially Community’s local reps. Community looks forward to working with Liberty Steel as jobs and production are brought back. We made it clear that the skilled workforce at Dalzell and Clydebridge deserved a future in steel and today’s news means that we are nearer to seeing that happen.
“Today is just the beginning of a new era for these steel mills. To help them and Scotland’s other steel producers be successful the work of the Scottish Government’s Task Force should continue.
“The next Scottish Government needs to implement an industrial and procurement strategy that enables Scottish steel to recover and then grow as part of an integrated UK steel industry.”
