Community takes Save Our Steel campaign to Parliament

28th October 2015

Members of Community, the steelworkers’ union, from steel plants across the UK have descended on Westminster to demand the Prime Minister takes immediate action to Save Our Steel. Community members unfurled a huge ‘Save Our Steel’ banner outside Parliament before attending a key debate in the House of Commons on the future of the steel industry. After meeting MPs from all parties, they have demanded immediate government action to enable the UK steel industry to survive the crisis.

During Prime Minister’s Questions, David Cameron gave a commitment to bring forward the Energy Intensive Industries Compensation Package, first announced in the 2014 budget, but only after state aid clearance is obtained from the European Commission.

sos banner parliamentRoy Rickhuss, Community General Secretary, said:

“I am extremely proud to have led this Community delegation to Parliament. We might come from steel communities the length and breadth of the UK, from Motherwell to Port Talbot, but today we are one family united in support of our industry and our collective future.

“Once again, trade unions and MPs have made the case for government action to give the UK steel industry a chance. There can be no doubt that the government now understands the case for action and the extreme urgency of the situation. Steelworkers have had enough warm words from government to last a lifetime. It is time for the Prime Minister to make a decisive intervention in support of this vital foundation industry.

“I was encouraged by the Prime Minister’s comments about bringing forward the compensation package for energy intensive industries, but hugely disappointed that he will only do so after state aid clearance is received from Europe. Our industry and our steelworkers cannot wait any longer for support. Just as they have done in Germany, our government must deliver the support package immediately and in full, then seek state aid clearance retrospectively.”

“Today has been a big day for Britain’s steelworkers, but it doesn’t stop here and we’ll be taking our campaign to towns and cities across the UK. Community trade union will continue leading the fight to Save our Steel – we will not rest until we secure the sustainable future we know can be built.”

Ends.
