On 19 June, reps of the steelworkers’ union Community came together to discuss the current position of manufacturing in the UK. With the industry landscape more unpredictable than ever, and with issues such as Trump’s tariffs, the Taxation (Cross Border Trade) Bill and Britain’s incoming departure from the European Union, there was plenty to discuss.
This is the first meeting of the group since Community held its first ever steel sector conference, in which Government Ministers, industry experts and senior union leadership discussed a new steel sector deal for the UK with the intention of safeguarding jobs, investing in new R&D and ensuring there is a level playing field on the world’s stage for UK steel making.
Steve McCool, National Officer for Steel & Education at Community, said “The meeting of our steel & wire sector committee on 19th June was a huge success. Community reps from across the UK came together to discuss the future of the steel industry here in the UK.
“As the steelworkers’ union we recognise the importance of leading the way in efforts to secure the future of our steel industry and our steel and wire committee plays a significant part in that. It is at these meetings that we set the direction of our campaigning and lobbying efforts.
“Our industry needs strong and decisive leadership to protect the foundation of UK manufacturing, and our steel and wire committee will help deliver that”
