The UK and Welsh Governments have announced a package of financial support for potential new owners of Tata Steel UK. Responding to this news, Roy Rickhuss, General Secretary of Community, the steelworkers’ union said:
“Today’s announcement is a positive step forward. This is a clear commitment to financially assist the UK steel industry as it seeks new ownership.
“For several weeks, I have had constructive conversations with the UK Business Secretary and the Welsh First Minister, pushing for governments to set out the practical support they can offer potential new investors. This news is a credit to Community members and the positive, professional ‘Save Our Steel’ campaign they have run since Tata first announced they intend to sell the business.
“We welcome the willingness of government to support debt financing and that they remain open to taking a 25% share in the business. Governments must continue to work closely with Community as we do everything we can to secure a future for our steel industry.
“We have been clear from the start that this steel crisis should not become a political football and we welcome the fact that the UK and Welsh Governments have taken this joint approach to such an important issue for our country.”
