Community helps relieve rainy days for pupils

23rd February 2018

A Flintshire school no longer has to worry about no playtime due to bad weather thanks to a donation provided by Community to purchase indoor toys such as board games and arts & crafts.

Community rep and father to one of the school children John Wainwright was concerned when he found out that Ysgol Croes Atti in Shotton had no undercover areas or indoor play equipment for the pupils when the weather was poor.

“The children ended up sat in a classroom watching DVDs at break time when they couldn’t go outside,” said John: “Last year my wife Nina worked at the school as a lunchtime assistant and we applied to my trade union Community’s regional charity committee.

“We were successful and were given money to buy indoor toys like a big jenga, connect 4, kerplunk, craft materials, train sets, cars and other toys.”

Upon purchasing the toys using the money donated by Community, Deputy Headteacher Mrs. Mevel said: “I’m very happy for the support being offered to the school. There is limited resources in the school and this equipment can be used indoors and outdoors if needed.”

Community has a Regional Charity fund of £500 available every 3 months for local charities and good causes available to our members in our Community branches. If you are a member with a charity or good cause you believe Community could support, you can apply here.
