Following the appointment of David Lammy to the role of Shadow Justice Minister, Community met with him to discuss their working partnership and the response to the coronavirus across the privatised justice and custodial sector.
Roy Rickhuss, General Secretary of Community, said:
“It was hugely positive to speak with David so soon after his appointment to the justice brief. This early engagement highlights David’s commitment to working across the sector, an approach that is more relevant than ever during the current crisis.
“The coronavirus represents an unprecedented challenge to the sector and to our members who are putting themselves at risk to keep the public safe. Working with David on the response to the crisis will help us to hold the government to account, and ensure the best possible measures are put in place to keep those working in the sector out of harms way.
“Given David’s understanding and experience of the sector we are looking forward to working together over the coming years, particularly around creating a safer justice sector for all. Furthermore, we were delighted that David made the commitment to us to visit a private prison following the current crisis to understand the experiences of our members.”
