Community’s General Secretary, Roy Rickhuss, has responded to the news of the death of a prisoner at HMP Pentonville.
Roy Rickhuss said:
“Community’s members and I are extremely saddened to hear of another death in our prison service, at HMP Pentonville, today.
“For a number of years now, colleagues throughout the justice sector have been warning of a safety crisis in UK prisons, from prison governors to the Chief Inspector.
“Our calls for urgent action from the Government have been ignored and it’s long past time the Government stopped paying lip service to this issue.
“This Government has a responsibility to those in its custody and those who continue to put themselves at risk every day as they go to work in our prisons. To continue to ignore it will only lead to further serious assaults and deaths in custody.”
Community, which represents thousands of workers in the justice and custodial sector is campaigning for government and private contractors to implement a new set of minimum safety standards. Community’s ‘Safe Operating Solutions’ Charter has been praised by front line staff, politicians and justice service providers.
