The justice services trade union, Community, announced today that it has secured a meeting with Minister for Prisons, Rory Stewart MP. At this meeting the union will be raising the concerns of its members in the justice and custodial sector.
The union is concerned that violence in prisons has become too regular an occurrence, which results in an unsafe working environment for prison staff. Ministry of Justice figures show the levels of violence in prisons rising at an alarming rate.
Community has been campaigning for a safer justice sector for all prison staff for a number of years, including through the creation of a Safer Justice Sector Charter which seeks to raise standards across the sector.
National Officer for the Justice and Custodial Sector, Adrian Axtell, said:
“The opportunity for us to meet with the Minister for Prisons, represents a huge opportunity for Community to be able to raise our members’ concerns at the highest level. We hope the views of our members will be taken seriously and that the measures we have been calling for will be implemented in order to secure a safer justice sector for all.”
