Community’s response to Thriving at Work: a review of mental health and employers.

‘Thriving at Work’ is a report into how employers can better support all individuals in employment including those with mental ill health or poor well-being to remain in and thrive through work. The report consisted of meetings and workshops with individuals who have experience of workplace mental health issues, over 200 employers and Deloitte.

The main findings of the report emphasised the scale of ill mental health in the UK as one of the biggest issues in the work place. In particular:

  • 300,000 people with a long term mental health problem lose their jobs each year
  • Large annual cost to employers of between £33 billion and £42 billion
  • Cost of poor mental health to Government is between £24 billion and £27 billion
  • Cost of poor mental health to the economy as a whole is between £74 billion and £99 billion per year

The review suggested various actions for employers to take such as producing mental health at work plans, developing mental health awareness and providing employees with good working conditions.

Community welcomed the findings of the report as this demonstrated that mental health needs to be a priority in all workplace and we are proud to be addressing the issues head on. However, unless the Government invests in mental health services that have been cut since 2010, the problems outlined in this review will unfortunately continue.
