Our mental health charter

At Community’s Torquay 2017 conference, delegates voted overwhelmingly for the union to pursue a campaign around mental health in the workplace. As part of this priority campaign, we have created a mental health charter for employers to sign up to.

Committing to positive action…

We believe mental health is an issue that no organisation can afford to ignore:

  • 1 in 4 British workers are affected by conditions like anxiety, depression and stress every year
  • Mental ill-health is the leading cause of sickness absence in the UK, costing an average of £1,035 per employee per year
  • 95% of employees calling in sick with stress gave a different reason

That’s why looking after the mental health of employees is so important, and can have a positive impact whilst making sense for your business or organisation. Tackling stigma can make a real difference to sickness absence rates, presenteeism levels, staff wellbeing and productivity, and retention.

In agreement with Community, the charter commits to:

  • Tackle stigma on mental health in the workplace
  • Challenge discrimination in the workplace
  • Promote equality of opportunity in recruitment and selection
  • Encourage mental health wellbeing
  • Raise awareness of local mental health support services

By signing Community’s charter, employers show that their organisation is working towards putting its principles in to practice and demonstrate their commitment to the mental wellbeing of their staff.

We hope the charter, alongside the reps guide on mental health, makes a real difference to our workplaces and to the experiences of your colleagues at work.

Download your charter here, and if you want help encouraging your employer to sign the charter, contact your Regional Organiser who will be happy to help.

We hope that the work done so far on our Mental Health campaign goes some way to making mental health a priority in every workplace.
