Community and the other steel trade unions are running a major national campaign calling on the government to make sure our steel industry is at the foundation of the UK’s recovery from the pandemic.
On the night of the General Election, we launched our campaign by taking the decision to place our industry at the heart of the future government and projecting the message that ‘Britain we need our steel’ onto the House of Commons, as pictured below.
We want to continue to carry our message across the country and create a broad coalition of groups, politicians and members of the public who together, can secure the future of our industry.
You can support the campaign by visiting the petition page at WeNeedOurSteel.UK.
We have also written to the Prime Minister and every council leader to ensure the continued support of the government and call for British steel to be at the forefront of our recovery.
HS2 is one project that presents a huge opportunity as our steel companies can produce 90% of the 2 million tonnes of steel required. We have written to the Chair of HS2 telling him exactly why it’s so important that HS2 is built with our steel.
The We Need Our Steel campaign has teamed up with the CSEU’s Keep Britain Afloat campaign to demand that naval support vessels are built in British shipyards using our steels. You can read the Mirror’s coverage of our demands here.
We’re constantly updating the campaign page, so make sure to check back.
