Over the past 24 hours, the Business Secretary, Greg Clark MP, has visited the three British Steel production sites – Scunthorpe, Skinningrove and the Teesside Beam Mill. The minister met with both management and unions.
Commenting following the visits, Roy Rickhuss, General Secretary of the steelworkers’ trade union Community, said:
“We welcome the fact the government is prioritising this issue and the Secretary of State is taking a personal interest. However, over the past few days we’ve heard a lot about what government can’t do and we need to know what government can do. It is clear that any companies showing an interest will need support from all stakeholders and government backing is vital. These are of course early days, but the process would be greatly helped with government being clearer about the steps it is prepared to take to secure the future for British Steel that everyone wants to see. All options within government’s power should be on the table to ensure we can save our steel.”
Community represents the majority of workers at British Steel and its contractors.
