The betting shop union Community has welcomed the approach to furlough taken across the retail betting sector. Betting shops were instructed to close by the government in March and consequently thousands of betting shop workers have been furloughed. The government’s Job Retention Scheme covers 80 per cent of wages up to £2,500 each month. All major betting employers have advised employees that they will be paying 100 per cent of earnings during furlough.
Adrian Axtell, National Secretary for Community, said:
“This is good news for our members across the betting sector and a welcome approach by all the employers. This is a challenging time for so many people and so not having the additional worries about pay during furlough demonstrates the responsible approach the betting sector has taken. The betting sector can hold its head up on this issue and we hope that this constructive approach to employee terms and conditions continues.”
The union has written to the companies today to thank them for paying Community’s members and other employees full pay through furlough.
Community has been representing thousands across the sector for almost two decades. Community members work across all the major chains – Betfred, Paddy Power, Ladbrokes Coral and William Hill – all of which are paying the 100% furlough. The union also has members at many of the smaller or independent chains.
Community has been a key stakeholder in the sector for some time and has worked in partnership with the industry to improve safety in betting shops.
The union has also advised and supported its members on a range of employment issues, including pensions changes and contract renegotiations.
Community has a network of experienced reps who are current or former betting shop workers, so know the industry. They provide individual trade union representation at grievance and disciplinary meetings. Over the years, the betting shop union reps have saved many members from dismissal and ensured people are treated legally and fairly.
