Roy was first elected General Secretary of Community in 2013 and was re-elected unopposed in 2018, securing nominations from branches representing 80% of the union’s membership.
Born and brought up in Wolverhampton, Roy first joined the ISTC, one of Community’s founding unions, when he started working in a steel tube rolling mill in Wolverhampton in 1979. His first elected union position was as a health & safety representative for his branch – Monmore Tubes.
Roy successfully applied to become a full-time union officer and left the tube mill in 1993. Roy has worked across a number of the union’s regions, including the West Midlands and the North West.
In 2004, the National Executive Council appointed Roy as Assistant General Secretary of the ISTC. The title was changed to National Officer following the merger with KFAT that formed Community.
Roy represents Community on the TUC General Council and is also a member of the Executive Council of the General Federation of Trade Unions. He is a member of the Unions 21 Commission on Collective Voice.
He was invited to join the government’s Industrial Strategy Council in 2018.
In the 2019 New Year honours he was awarded a CBE for services to the steel industry.
When not travelling the UK meeting members and negotiating with employers, Roy loves spending time with his twin granddaughters and his grandson. Roy has also previously volunteered as a qualified Samaritans counsellor.
