A tribute to Paul Horton

6th January 2020

Community was extremely shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Paul Horton. Paul was one of the senior reps at the Tata Steel Orb Works in Newport. He had been at the forefront of the trade union’s campaign to find a future for the electrical steels plant.

Roy Rickhuss, General Secretary of Community, said:

“The union has lost a true stalwart who has been taken far too soon. Paul was a champion for his works and his colleagues and he was a key voice for our Orb campaign, always willing and able to articulate the views of the workforce be that in the media, with management or with politicians. He was passionate about his works and the steel industry and a dedicated servant of the union. This truly is a tragic loss and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. I am proud to have called him a friend over many years. Our thoughts go out to his friends and family.”

Paul served as branch secretary and president for the Tata Orb Middle Management (Staff) branch from 2013 up until his untimely death. He had previously held many different union roles in the Orb Works branch, including serving as a Union Learning Rep as well as a Health & Safety rep. Paul had been a member of Community and its predecessor the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation for over 35 years.

Paul spoke on behalf of the workforce at the end of the Save Orb Steel march that took place in Newport on 12 October and had made regular media appearances through the course of the campaign.

The funeral and cremation will take place at Langstone in Newport on Wednesday 22 January at 3.30pm.
