Community, the justice sector union has today called for job guarantees for those working at the Dungavel House Immigration Removal Centre. This follows an announcement by the Home Office that it intends to close Dungavel by the end of next year. Community represents staff at the immigration centre and has been campaigning in recent months for improved safety standards in Dungavel and across the whole justice sector.
Speaking about the Home Office announcement, Community’s Lead Organiser for Scotland, Steve Farrell said:
“This news will have caused great concern amongst Community’s members at Dungavel. Workers at the centre carry out important and difficult roles, in a very challenging environment. The Home Office must give a firm commitment that jobs will be protected and that Community will be involved throughout the whole process.
“Community officials have already been in dialogue with our local reps at the site and will be there next week to meet with our members and with management to discuss the next steps. I know how worried Community’s members will be about the situation and their union will be doing everything we can to support them at this difficult time.”
