Hours of work

The Working Time Regulations describe your basic rights in relation to working hours. These rules apply to most people, but there are some exclusions applying to particular groups and situations.

Basic Statutory working time rights

Specific rules apply to workers under the age of 18. If you are under 18 you may want to contact us for further information.

Most workers over the age of 18 have the right to:

  • 6 weeks paid holiday a year which may include bank holidays
  • A break when working six hours or longer
  • An 11 hour rest period every working day
  • A 24 hour rest period every seven days
  • A maximum of an average 48 hour working week
  • A maximum of an average 8 hours night work every 24 hours
  • Free health assessment for all night shift workers
