A bit about Roy

Picture Drew Farrell Tel : 07721-735041Born and brought up in Wolverhampton, Roy first joined the ISTC, one of Community’s founding unions, when he started working in a steel tube rolling mill in Wolverhampton in 1979.  His first elected union position was as a health & safety representative for his branch – Monmore Tubes.

Roy successfully applied to become a full-time union officer and left the tube mill in 1993.  Roy has worked across a number of the union’s regions, including the West Midlands and the North West.

In 2004, the National Executive Council appointed Roy as Assistant General Secretary of the ISTC.  The title was changed to National Officer following the merger with KFAT that formed Community.

Roy represents Community on the TUC General Council and is also a member of the Executive Council of the General Federation of Trade Unions.  He is a member of the Semta (the UK sector skills council for manufacturing) Metals Sector Strategy Group.

When not travelling the UK meeting members and negotiating with employers, Roy loves spending time with his twin granddaughters and his grandson.  Roy has also previously volunteered as a qualified Samaritans counsellor.
